My name is Jonathan Variames, and I’m a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). I work with patients ages 13 and older through every stage of adulthood, including older adults. My areas of focus include depression, anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, ADHD, and medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders.

I believe mental healthcare starts with creating a relationship where you feel safe, welcomed, and understood, regardless of your background. My approach is collaborative and individualized, combining medication management with evidence-based strategies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, solution-focused brief therapy, and supportive therapy. I enjoy getting to know my patients, understanding where they want to be in life, and working together to create a realistic plan to help them get there.

I have more than a decade of healthcare experience, including six years as a registered nurse, primarily in critical care and emergency medicine. Caring for individuals experiencing suicidal crises, substance use and withdrawal, overdose, and psychosis showed me both the importance of mental healthcare and how difficult it can be to access the right support. Those experiences ultimately led me to pursue my PMHNP training at the University of Texas at Arlington and develop a passion for outpatient psychiatry.

I believe in treating the whole person—not just a diagnosis—and empowering patients with the knowledge and support they need to make informed decisions about their wellness.

I grew up in North Texas and am proud to serve the community I call home. Outside of work, I enjoy running, watching just about any sporting event, and spending time with my family.
